A play of lights,
colors and spectacular views, this is LAGO MAGGIORE an area with
a dual ambience: a Mediterranean in the lovely atmosphere of its
small harbor or in the brillant colors of its flower and alpine
with snow capped mountains that dominate the lake concealing
picturesque fairy tale type towns.
Luino is
a pleasant little town a few kilometers far from the
Italian-Swiss border.
Due to its climatic and morphological characteristics, its gardens
and parks, the impressive rows of mature plane trees that line
the harbor, and the old town centre planned during the
Napoleonic era, Luino resembles a typical Mediterranean
lakeside town. Worth a visit is the church of Madonna of
Carmine with its fifteenth century frescoes by Bernardino Luini,
the church of San Giuseppe with its eighteenth century organ,
and the church of San Pietro near the graveyard slightly away
from the center, with its valuable Fresco, again by B. Luini,
and the eleventh century Romanesque bell tower.
Every Wednesday the picturesque Mark founded 500 years ago by
emperor Charles Vth is held, and it is considered one of the
oldest market in Europe.
