Among the many beauties of this lake are its 11 islands, 8 of which are in Piedmont and 1 in Lombardy. The fascinating archipelago of the Borromean Islands, between Stresa and Verbania, includes Isola Madre, Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori. On three characteristic cliffs are the remains of the Fortezza Vitaliana sought by Count Ludovico Borromeo and called Castles of Cannero. Not to be missed are the island of La Malghera, the isle of Partegora and the beautiful isle of St. Giovanni in front of Verbania, where Arturo Toscanini lived for a long time in the seventeenth century Palazzo Borromeo.
